Prospect Watch 2019: Week 16

July 9, 2019 by RayFlowers

Each week we will try to give a quick update on each of the top-40 minor leaguers that could help out in the fantasy game in 2019. Of course, there is an element of uncertainty with all of this as we never quite know when a team will decide to call up a youngster or if that role will be of the full-time variety. We will do our best each week to give you a quick reference guide as to where the elite youngsters are, and if they are performing well enough to bring their game to the Major League level. And yes, there are injuries in the minor leagues as well (if you thought injuries were merely limited to the big-league level). Teams are just gonna call up young players if they deserve to get a shot in the big leagues anymore, with seemingly no interest in the future and contract concerns. Teams are playing to win right now, and we applaud it.

2019 Prospect Report TEAM POS LEVEL COMMENT
1 Kyle Tucker HOU OF AAA Through 82 games he’s at .275-2464-63-19 in a remarkable start to the season.
2 Bo Bichette TOR SS AAA He has 17 hits in 8 games with two homers and two steals. OPS up to .941.
3 Luis Urias SD 2B/SS AAA Month by month OPS: 1.326, 1.070, .817 and .785.
4 Mitch Keller PIT SP AAA Has a 1.16 WHIP against righties, and he continues to succeed against minor leaguers.
5 Ryan Mountcastle BAL 3B AAA Has a 0.14 BB/K ratio which is ghastly. In 80 games he’s at .307-15-51.
6 Monte Harrison FLA OF AAA Is at 9/20 in just 50 games. Has a 10-game hitting streak, with a single hit in nine of them.
7 Luis Robert CWS OF AA Promotion to AAA after Future’s Game. He owns a .349/.401/.618 line with 29 steals.
8 Jake Fraley SEA OF AAA Had a .925 OPS at AA. The mark is 1.015 in 14 AAA outings. Owns a .944 mark on the year.
9 Carter Kieboom WAS SS AAA Has a 1.126 OPS vs. lefties and .972 against righties. Doesn’t seem like there’s a spot in the bigs.
10 Anthony Alford TOR OF AAA The last 10 has six steals and a .351 average, but he’s on the DL, likely with an oblique injury.
11 Nick Madrigal CWS 2B AA Hitting an amazing .392 in 25 AA outings with 11 steals. Certainly ready for the next level.
12 Devin Smeltzer MIN SP AAA His last three outings are one in May, June, July: 1.02 WHIP, 3.25 K/BB. Has a 1.92 ERA in 14 starts.
13 Yonathan Daza COL OF AAA No one is hitting better. He’s at .381 the last 10 and .377 on the year with a .992 OPS at AAA.
14 Justus Sheffield SEA SP AA Took demotion to heart, and is dominating. In four AA outings: 1.00 ERA, 0.78 WHIP, 5.8 K/BB ratio.
15 Jorge Mateo OAK 2B AAA Hit .268 in June, .273 in July with an OBP under .300 to drop season long marks down to .308 and .342.
16 Anthony Kay NYM SP AAA June: 9.64 ERA, 2.00 WHIP. If Vargas is dealt, does Kay get the call?

18 Yusniel Diaz BAL OF AA Has three homers and 10 RBI the last 10, but a mere .244/.328/.443 line on the year.
19 Jo Adell LAA OF AA Has a hit in 9-of-10. Hitting .360 with four homers and four steals in 24 AA outings.
20 Nick Gordon  MIN SS AAA Has 12 steals, but offensive game remains boring (.290/.332/.449 with two homers in 50 games).
21 Adbert Alzolay CHC SP AAA Had a K per inning in three Cubs outings, but a 1.68 WHIP. Return date is uncertain.

25 Gavin Lux LAD SS AAA No spot in bigs with Corey Seager close to return. Lux: .332/.392/.554 in 71 games.
26 Austin Hays BAL OF A On rehab assignment, again. Hitting .236 with a .279 OBP and a .744 OPS.

30 Forrest Whitley HOU SP AAA Started throwing off mound July 3rd. Return to game action is TBD.
31 Matt Manning DET SP AA 11-straight of 3 ER or less. On year, has a 1.04 WHIP and 10.48 K/9 rate.
32 Jared Walsh LAA 1B AAA 11 walks the last 10 to help boost OBP to .421. Has a 1.015 OPS and 15 HRs in 61 outings.
33 Jesus Luzardo OAK SP AAA Another setback, this one to shoulder. Out 4-5 weeks, so big league debut might be September?
34 Joe Palumbo TEX SP AAA Has 14 Ks in 9.1 AAA innings. Has 83 Ks in 63 IP overall. Big arm, but 4.14 BB/9 rate.
35 Sixto Sanchez FLA SP AA Seems unlikely he’s more than a September call up. Was torched last time out raising ratios to 4.05 and 1.31.
36 Sean Murphy OAK C AAA We still await his return from knee issue. He last played on April 29th.
37 Justin Dunn SEA SP AA Has a 4.58 K/BB ratio the last three, and a 4.17 mark on the season.
