Vlad Sedler writes a great FAAB article every weekend helping you to gauge the market and how much of your cash you should be dropping on Player A or B. Many Monday, Ray Flowers tries to follow up Vlad’s advice piece with a review of how folks spent their free agent dough in the industry leagues over the weekend, from AL-only leagues, to 12 and 15 team mixed leagues (I also always touch on waivers in my Ray’s Rundown podcast every Saturday).
*With the crazy rookie action this week, I will profile each leagues bidding on those youngsters who were added across the fantasy universe this weekend: Brendan Rodgers, Keston Hiura, Austin Riley, Nicky Lopez, Oscar Mercado, Willie Calhoun and Corbin Martin.

That Calhoun bid was overkill. I think he’s a .270-20 kinda bat right now, so that’s a very aggressive bid, and obviously, nearly twice the bid of anyone else. That’s my issue with Calhoun. Does he, is he, likely to stand out in a mixed league outfield? Not only does he have to battle for playing time – Hunter Pence has been killing it of late – he just doesn’t profile as a .300 hitter or a guy who is likely to hit 30 homers. There has to have been similar bats on waivers that would have cost much, much less in many leagues (maybe not this one with sharp owners, but a bid over $150 strikes me as aggressive).
Hiura – added last week to avoid the bidding frenzy (same with Martin).
Lopez had some spirited, and close bidding as five teams all went 117-177 on the speedy middle infielder.
Mercado had way more aggressive bids that I thought were advisable. He sat more than expected last week, but some folks still deemed him to be worthy of bidding on for that previous speed.
Riley was the big-ticket item with three people offering up at least 31 percent of their season long budget. Losing by five dollars was that second place bid as the top mark clearly hit it exactly right to get the slugger from Atlanta.
Small token for me here. If it wasn’t for the winning bid on Rodgers, I would own him as I big two and four dollars more than the fellas in 3rd and 4th spots.

The bidding was absolutely fierce in this league.
I grabbed Rodgers again. Continue to be a bit surprised that the bidding wasn’t a bit more aggressive on Rodgers when people were making it rain to add Calhoun.

Riley cleared 30 percent again, but oddly, and I’m VERY surprised, only one other bid was within 50 percent of the winning bid. This bidding is not reflective of what the universal industry did this past weekend.
Another Rodgers win for Mr. Flowers, just barely ahead of one other strong bid. Given the cost, wish I would have won Hiura instead (my bid for him was $167, but I won Rodgers). I’m shocked the bidding on Hiura was this low, but folks simply slow played it given that this is a mere 12-team league. Jeez, given the cost of Lopez, might even have been better to be in on him. The league was asleep on this one allowing leader Adam Roenis to strengthen his team even further.
Tommy La Stella $134 (88, 58, 55, 45, 17) has been a monster. His numbers the last 23 games are absurd: .347-7-16-15 with a .412 OBP and .653 SLG. Dude, this guy has 11 homers and 10 walks this season. #Amazing
Jordan Lyles $105 (27, 21, 21, 13, 8, 8) – I wrote about Lyles last week in this Player Profile.

I added Rodgers at the expense of Willy Adames trading one young shortstop for another. I should have went with my original bid of $181 (I upped it at the end to get it across the $200 barrier).
Brandon Workman $43 (6) – This one seems like a wasted bit o’ spending after he picked up a single save last week.
Roenis Elias $33 (11) – I was the backup bid here, but with only one guy to drop, I obviously preferred the potentially impressive bat versus the middling 9th inning option.
A.J. Pollock $22 – A sneaky stash (I have Justin Upton as my OF stash in this league that doesn’t have DL spots).
Jordan Luplow $16 – He has five homers, eight RBI and 10 runs scored the last two weeks.
Here is some further date from the NFBC.
Thirty players went for $200 or more across the drafts. The highest bids were Hiura ($630), Riley ($611), Martin ($45), Lopez ($391), Rodgers ($380) and Calhoun ($378).
Here is a look at how the bidding went across the format.
AL LABR (12-TEAM ONLY) – $100
*There is a rule that any player that you paid for in the auction, or any player you pay for off waivers, must be active in your lineup. That means you cannot bench a struggling player in this format, he must remain in your lineup. That further means when you add a player off waivers, unless one of your guys was placed on the DL or sent to the minors, that you have to drop someone you paid money on to add players off waivers.
