Prospect Watch 2019: Week 8

May 15, 2019 by RayFlowers

Each week we will try to give a quick update on each of the top-40 minor leaguers that could help out in the fantasy game in 2019. Of course, there is an element of uncertainty with all of this as we never quite know when a team will decide to call up a youngster or if that role will be of the full-time variety. We will do our best each week to give you a quick reference guide as to where the elite youngsters are, and if they are performing well enough to bring their game to the Major League level. And yes, there are injuries in the minor leagues as well (if you thought injuries were merely limited to the big-league level). This week, we lose Keston Hiura and Austin Riley, as teams are saying to hell with that Super 2 thing – they are just gonna call up young players if they deserve to get a shot in the big leagues.

2019 Prospect Report TEAM POS LEVEL COMMENT
1 Keston Hiura MIL 2B AAA See his Player Profile.
2 Kyle Tucker HOU OF AAA All of a sudden, he’s rolling. In May: .362/.455/.830 with six homers and three steals.
3 Jesus Luzardo OAK SP TBD We’re expecting him to get some game action before the end of the month.
4 Yordan Alvarez HOU 1B/OF AAA His May numbers: .481/.563/.852 with four homers and 18 RBI in 14 games.
5 Brendan Rodgers COL SS AAA See his Player Profile.
6 Austin Riley ATL 3B AAA See his Player Profile.
7 Luis Urias SD 2B/SS AAA Shouldn’t be in minors. Hitting .351 last 10 with four homers, eight RBI and nine runs scored.
8 Mitch Keller PIT SP AAA Pretty close to major league ready. He’s added a cutter/slider, and once he’s got that locked in, he’ll get a promotion.
9 Ryan Mountcastle BAL 3B AAA Hitting .326 the last 10 and .324 on the year. Sporting a .857 OPS with a .507 SLG.
10 Dylan Cease CWS SP AAA Struggling a bit against righties with a .271 BAA and a terrible 1.69 WHIP.
11 Cavan Biggio TOR 2B AAA Hitting .400 during the day, .266 at night. Has an impressive 1.33 BB/K ratio on the year.
12 Touki Toussaint ATL SP AAA Has a 6.35 ERA in the majors and a 7.11 ERA in the minors.
13 Oscar Mercado CLE OF MLB See his Player Profile.
14 Forrest Whitley HOU SP AAA Was passed over for a callup. Easy to see why: 10.80 ERA, 1.80 WHIP in six outings.
15 Austin Hays BAL OF A Finally over thumb issue. Three games in, he’s 1-for-11.
16 Logan Allen SD SP AAA No earned runs in two, one in three, four in five. He’s locked in with just five walks in five outings.
17 Casey Mize DET SP AA Just dominate. Only about how quickly Tigers want to push him. 1.24 ERA, 0.53 WHIP, 9.6 K/BB ratio.
18 Willie Calhoun TEX OF AAA The last 10: .394-2-7-6 with 10 walks. Hunter Pence surging hurts his callup outlook, but he was crushing it.
19 Justus Sheffield SEA SP AAA Five of six outings 2 ER or less. Still, the walks are everywhere, 25 in 31 innings. Just not locked in.
20 Brendan McKay TB SP AA Three earned runs in five games. Has a 5.88 K/BB and 14.26 K/9 as he’s dominated all comers.
21 Luis Robert CWS OF AA  Slowed since promotion. In 11 games: .244/.340/.415 while going 3-for-6 on the bases.
22 Monte Harrison FLA OF AAA Nine steals in nine games. Has a .366 OBP but strikeouts still significant (45 in 129 at-bats).
23 Jorge Mateo OAK 2B AAA Has 14 Ks in 10 games, but also hitting .311 with four steals and 11 runs. Impressive .937 OPS on the season.
24 A.J. Puk OAK SP E.S. Working his way back from T.J. surgery. The A’s hope that he will be able to toss some second half innings.
25 Sixto Sanchez FLA SP AA Has only 13 strikeouts in 17 innings, but he has a 1.12 WHIP and has looked pretty sharp in three outings.
26 Bo Bichette TOR SS AAA Hitting .250 with .938 OPS against lefties. Hitting .250 with a .637 OPS against righties.
27 Yusniel Diaz BAL OF AA A mere .450 OPS against lefties and .703 against righties. Not performing up to expectations.
28 Tyler Beede SF SP AAA Back in the minors. Has been extremely messy in three big league outings.
29 Matt Manning DET SP AA Continues to impress. Has a 5.50 K/BB, 2.40 ERA and 0.80 WHIP in seven starts.
30 Kolby Allard ATL SP AAA 6-of-7 outings 3 ER or less, but still a 4.00 ERA with a 1.39 WHIP.
31 Ian Anderson  ATL SP AA Thirteen walks his last 12.2 innings. Really fighting it, despite 21 punchouts in that time.
32 Sean Murphy OAK C AAA Could be out of action through June. Won’t be in majors until well into second half.
33 Bryse Wilson ATL SP AAA Both lefties and righties hitting .300. Numbers are .290 at home and .316 away.
34 Dennis Santana LAD SP AAA Walked four last time out. That’s six walks in eight innings. Overall, 1.72 WHIP and 5.17 ERA in four outings.
35 Kyle Wright ATL SP AAA Three home starts have been disastrous: 14 ER in 10.2 innings. Has controlled lefties well with a .220 BAA.
36 Nick Madrigal CWS 2B A Slumping with .179 AVG last 10. Overall slash line is certainly disappointing: .250/.324/.339.
37 Zack Collins CWS C AAA 15 Ks in 10 games, but still hit .289. The .370 OBP and .581 SLG on the year excite.
38 Anthony Alford TOR OF AAA Has 43 Ks in 106 at-bats. Nothing else really matters at this point.
39 Brent Honeywell TB SP AAA One more week to keep you updated. He will be off the list next week.
40 Nick Gordon  MIN SS AAA He’s back on the DL, this time with a left abductor strain. His first half is shot.
