Prospect Watch 2019: Week 5

April 23, 2019 by RayFlowers

Each week we will try to give a quick update on each of the top-40 minor leaguers that could help out in the fantasy game in 2019. Of course, there is an element of uncertainty with all of this as we never quite know when a team will decide to call up a youngster or if that role will be of the full-time variety. We will do our best each week to give you a quick reference guide as to where the elite youngsters are, and if they are performing well enough to bring their game to the Major League level. And yes, there are injuries in the minor leagues as well (if you thought injuries were merely limited to the big-league level).

2019 Prospect Report TEAM POS LEVEL COMMENT
1 Vladimir Guerrero TOR 3B AAA Could be up by the end of the week. Hasn’t played 3 days in a row yet. Has a .970 OPS, 2 HRs in 10 games.
2 Nick Senzel CIN Player AAA He’s expected to make his season debut Tuesday. Could be ready in a couple of weeks.
3 Justus Sheffield SEA SP AAA Rumors suggest he could be called up to take over after The Opener effort of Kikuchi.
4 Forrest Whitley HOU SP AAA Through three he has 13 Ks, 5 BBs and a 1.36 WHIP over 11 IP. Still searching a bit.
5 Brendan Rodgers COL SS AAA Nine BB, 8 Ks in 10 games. Overall, has a .250/.347/.428 slash line with three homers.
6 Keston Hiura MIL 2B AAA Already gone deep five times with a .942 OPS though he does have 24 Ks in 68 at-bats.
7 Dylan Cease CWS SP AAA Has walked three in three outings with 14 punchouts, a 0.82 WHIP and a .180 BAA.
8 Yordan Alvarez HOU 1B/OF AAA Hottest hitter in the minors. In 17 games: .339-10-26-15 with a 1.366 OPS with a 1.00 BB/K ratio.
9 Bo Bichette TOR SS AAA Bichette was hit on the hand Tuesday, and early reports suggest there is a break. Breaking story.
10 Kyle Tucker HOU OF AAA Where is the game? M.I.A right now (.129/.182/.274).
11 Jesus Luzardo OAK SP TBD Luzardo is just start to throw. Probably a month or so before he gets into game action.
12 Willie Calhoun TEX OF AAA Nothing standout at all in his game so far: .254/.351/.448 with 12 Ks and 10 BBs.
13 Yusniel Diaz BAL OF AA A slow start with a .679 OPS, though 11 Ks and 8 BBs in 17 games not bad.
14 Touki Toussaint ATL SP AAA Had a great relief outing, got some starting work, and now he’s back in the minors. Up and down.
15 Logan Allen SD SP AAA Much better last two times out (3 ER, 11 Ks, 3 BB). That 1.80 K/BB ratio needs to greatly improve.
16 Mitch Keller PIT SP AAA Has 22 Ks in 20 IP, but he won’t survive in bigs with that walk rate (5.85 per nine).
17  Carter Kieboom WAS SS AAA One of the best hitters in the early going: .371/.500/.581 with 16 RBI in 17 games.
18 Austin Hays BAL OF AAA Still hasn’t played (thumb). The Orioles have an OF need with Cedric Mullins demoted.
19 Jonathan Loaisiga NYY SP AAA Will likely be up and down all year long. Was called up to start Against the Angels Tuesday.
20 Dennis Santana LAD SP AAA First outing in the minors this year: 4 ER, 4 BB in 2.1 IP. #BigLeagueHangover
21 Cal Quantrill SD SP AAA Five walks in four outings. Five ER last three after a 6-spot in his first outing.
22 Griffin Canning  LAA SP AAA Has allowed one ER in three outings with 17 Ks, 2 BBs in 16 IP.
23 Austin Riley ATL 3B AAA Hitting .209 on the year with a terrible .602 OPS. At least only 17 Ks in 17 games.
24 Nick Madrigal CWS 2B A Has a .354 OBP and 13 RBI but amazingly just two runs scored.
25 Sixto Sanchez FLA SP AA The team is being EXTREMELY cautious here. Will debut in May.
26 Sean Murphy OAK C AAA Hitting a robust .364/.453/.509 in minors with lone blemish – 15 Ks in 55 ABs.
27 Brendan McKay TB SP AA Flat out dominant with 27 Ks in 13.2 IP with only three walks.
28 Ryan Mountcastle BAL 3B AAA Won International Player of the Week honors with four homers, 11 RBI and a .889 SLG.
29 Monte Harrison FLA OF AAA His last nine he has two homers 11 runs and three steals, though still contact issues – 11 Ks.
30 Anthony Alford TOR OF AAA Has 17 Ks his last 10 with just five hits. Simply cannot find any consistency at all.
31 Zack Collins CWS C AAA He has 12 RBI his last 10, and has a .351 OBP on the year, but 14 Ks in 10 games as well.
32 Kolby Allard ATL SP AAA In his three AAA starts there is a .280 BAA, 1.43 WHIP and 2.40 K/BB.
33 Triston McKenzie CLE SP AA He is closing in on a return to throwing.
34 Brent Honeywell TB SP AAA An exam found no structural issues with his elbow, so no great concern. Still, he’s shutdown for now.
35 Chris Shaw SF OF AA  Four Ks in 33 ABs. Owns a solid .348 OBP and .475 SLG.
36 Kyle Wright ATL SP AAA Faired poorly in majors. In one minor lg. outing 5 ER in 4 IP. More of the same.
37 Casey Mize DET SP A Dominant. One walk and 21 Ks in 18 IP with just one run allowed. That was before Tuesday outing (8 IP, 1 H, 0 ER).
38 Nick Gordon  MIN SS AAA Still hasn’t played.
39 Tyler Beede SF SP AAA Just 11 hits in 17 IP with a whopping 28 Ks. Ready for a role.
40 Ian Anderson  ATL SP AA Three ER in three outings with 15 Ks. Walked eight though.
